When John Henry leaps out at me, immortalised in stone.
Did you leave with glory in your eyes, were you filled with pride when you sailed for France and the crowd it cheered good-bye?
It was a different story at the Line, no glory just goodbyes, when you fell drenched in blood, in that Flanders mud.

What were they thinking when they sent you off to fight,
Do we remember, or do we even try,
There’s only sadness left behind, in your widow’s eyes,
You were only 19.

So John Henry I will stop by, from time to time to keep your mem’ry alive, ‘cause I’ve a debt to pay.
You see it could’ve been my Grandfather, no, it would’ve been his dad who perished, but I’m afraid you died in vain.
Because now there’s fighting in every corner of the world and we’re not learning from that War to end all Wars.
They fight in the name of God but it wasn’t Christ who died for me but John Henry, August 1916.
